I know this has been talked about a lot in the board, but can't find it right now. Although this website it talking specifically about specialty threads, it does a nice job of illustrating the different ways threads can be wound. This part applies to all threads, not just the specialty ones. Hope it helps. http://www.quiltuniversity.com/difficult_threads.htm
Thank you. I get it now. And incidentally I was machine quilting a small wall hanging and having trouble with the thread. Now I know why. Thanks again. I learn something every day here!

Ok , here we go. Update on the turner. I used the industrial sticky tape, the velcro type. I taped a piece on each side of the dvd case bottom and taped the mate to the underside of a 3 inch lazy susan. I put the cone on and the bottom of the cone fits inside a circle on the LS...I just pulled by hand and it glides like butta lol......this is good.

Thread turner, my way lol

I'm pretty sure the hardware stores do have them. I'm going to make me one of those. You are a genius, Rosy!!

Kudos to Rosyhf! I just grabbed an old CD holder that would have been tossed. It had a couple of worthless cds on it that I plan to use to help me turn and it looks that will do the trick for my bigger cones! When I first saw that $150 kwik thread turning tool, I was considering it and to wait for a half price sale, but that is still $$$! Since so many threads are cross wound and I do have a smaller vertical pin for those that aren't, I'd rather spend my monies on the thread itself. This set up will satisfy any bigger thread needs! Thanks Rosyhf!

I don't know what machine you would use a $150 thread turning tool for. Why not buy a good thread stand?

I think rosyhf had a great idea here. My solution was to rescue the multi thread holder off of my serger that took a dump before discarding it and mounted it to a heavy base to set on the right back side of my sewing machine. The nice part is there are four spindles to put thread onto if you are embroidering and have lots of color changes and there are the holes in the periscoping arm to thread the thread into to making the thread come off perfectly.
