I haven't bought a FQ in several years now. I have won a few in our guild but that is the extent of FQ's I am a yardage person. I can believe I would ever pay that much for a FQ when that is about what I would pay for a full yard. I have been doing my best to shop from my stash the last 2 years. The Moratorium here has been helping me so much. I am thankful I can shop from my stash best of luck with your shopping.

I love FQ's, and have almost 300 in my stash. I have paid from between .99 cents to $4.00 for them. It has to be really something special for me to pay the $4.00! I'm surprised that they can stay in business charging that much. My favorite outlet charges $2.00 and has a great selection.

The shops here sell them for$2.75- 4.00. The FQ bundles at Joann's have 5 pieces@ 9.99 w/o coupon.

I love quilt shops but sometimes they are just out of my price range. Glad I have a stash.

I would think businesses know what the market can bare in their area. I guess many are buying the goods at that price. Car dealers here sell many vehicles over $75,000.00. Not me but enough mes to keep them in business.

Check Ebay and Etsy there are a lot of $8.00 and $10.00 fat quarters. People are buying up the cute licensed fabrics and selling the fat quarters at the outrageous prices.

The original poster is in Canada, which (partly) explains why the FQ was so expensive.
A metre (3" longer than a yard) of LQS quality cotton is between $18 and $26/m here. Which still makes $8.00 for a FQ ridiculous.
There is a regular fabric store here that charges outrageous prices ($36.00/m for batiks) but has lots of 50% off sales...if you're a member.
All of this makes me happy that I live near a border and can occasionally go to Joann's to get fabric where the selection is 5x's as great at less than half the cost even with the difference on the money. (Now, if my stash just holds out until the border opens again!)
