    Default toddler quilt size suggestions

I am making an I spy quilt for my friend whose daughter had twins. I am only making one larger quilt instead of two baby quilts. I figure they will be recieving all kinds of baby blankets and such. I want to make a quilt that will be more useful as time passes. It can be used as a tummy time mat soon but down the road, maybe to take on a picnic, or lay on the floor with, or whatever. I have 4 ½ inch squares and will figure out how I want to put it all together. What size would you recommend? I was leaning toward more of a lap quilt size. I am also going to make each girl a name pillow and charm square bib... It's my plan anyway..(Every time I get a novelty fabric I cut a 4 ½ inch square and save them...)

I made my grands many quilt when they were toddlers to drag around. The size that was best for them was around 45 x 55. Big enough to cover and big enough to hide under.

Smaller quilts I make sure I can use regular quilting cotton fabric for backing. The width of fabric is approx. 42-44 so I make the top is about 40 inches wide and between 50 and 60 inches long because I like rectangular quilts.

I think of a toddler size quilt as 42" X 60". I think of an adult size throw as 60" X 72". Either size works well with minky.

I tend to make a twin size quilt if not a baby quilt only because they go from toddler to twin beds very fast. It is a blanket that can be carried by toddles or younger children easily. I only have to watch my grandchildren to see how that goes. Right now I have a stack of quilts that were made early on and now that they are 8-9 yrs old are in need of Nana's touch to repair. They have been well used. and will be used again.

Make a lap/twin size. 48-54 x 60-72. Perfect for placing two babies on especially when they start to roll and crawl. Later on you can make a more specific quilt for each twin if you like.

Just have to say what you have done is pretty!

I think I have a couple of the same fabrics too. You are making progress!

When I made my girls' baby quilts, I made them big because I hoped they would use them on their toddler beds. They're 3 and 5yo now and they both still love their baby quilts best. They're about 56 x 66 which tucks nicely under the foot of the bed (little kids are crazy sleepers) but still enough length to fold down the top portion and tuck securely around them at night.

Whatever size you choose, I'm sure the recipients will love them!

Thank for the thread and comments. I was wondering what size others make "toddler quilts". Now I know! I make donation quilts for Project Linus.
