You may want to check out the Wondercut Ruler if you make a lot of HSTs. It's great and no squaring up needed.

Thats a nice method but the ruler is sure expensive. Wish Joanns carried it then could use a coupon.
They carry Quilt in a Day rulers and they are not as expensive to begin with.
I like both methods especially because one uses large squares and the other uses strips. That way whatever size your fabric is could judge which method to use.

This one looks soooo interesting. I haven't seen (or rather, noticed) this one. The method I use for HST is cutting 2 squares, drawing a line down the middle diagonally, and sewing 1/4 in. on each side of the line, then slashing along the line. I cut the square 7/8 in. larger than the size of the HST I desire. Is that right? I have pretty much to trim off, but at least I know that I'll have enough fabric.

Thanks, BellaBoo. I will look at that one the next time I'm in a shop. The info on the link is very thorough.

I use the Quilt in a Day ruler shown above and love it. Has made a real difference in my HST.
