Default Triangles

Saw where you sew all around 4 edges and then cut diagonally 2x to make half square, but need to formula to figure out size of beginning squares. Anybody know what I am saying? LOL

what I do is use paper. like day old news paper or what ever u have, copy paper works well too. start with a square larger than u want sew 2 pieces together and then cut it and measure the piece u end up with. then go up or down in size depending on what u need. I hope this helps u some.

Multiply UNFINISHED size of desired HST by square root of 2 (1.414) to get size of starting square. (I would make it a little bigger and trim it down.) Be sure to starch the fabric and handle carefully if you use this method because all the outside edges of the HST will be on the bias.

I tried this method and my results were wonky. I do not recommend it - at all.

Using that particular method leaves all the tri's with bias edges that you will be joining together.

Another method that will make 8 HST's is to sew on each diagonal (1/4" on each side of both diagonals, so 4 total sewing lines), then you cut down each diagonal. This way the straight of grain is the unfinished edge of each HST and much easier to sew.

Here's the Tute

And another with sizes at the bottom ...
