First - in my mind the finished size means minus the seam allowance......unfinished includes seam allowance. So, why would you need to know the finished size of a unit of the block during construction? To be accurate in completion of that block one needs the unfinished correct measurements of each unit......I am not in my sewing room now, but I do believe, for example, Eleanor Burns will give you measurements as you go.......I guess I just check as I go just by adding 1/2" to whatever finished size would be. Ex: 3 - 2 1/2" squares sewn together.......2+2+2=6(finished) +1/2 = 6 1/2".........

I design on EQ7 and print out a line drawing of the actual block (like the kind used in PP). I usually tape the paper to cardboard and keep it close by. I can tell pretty quick when I have something wrong if I compare my pieces to the schematic. Of course I still have seam allowances on my pieces, but it is helpful to me to see if the pieces are big enough and seem to follow the pattern. It is a check that I need. As to actual trimming, I wouldn't trim until I have the other adjoining pieces done. Trimming is a terminal decision-there is no coming back from cutting something too small.

I always try to figure out what size the units are supposed to be. Too much trimming can have consequences, such as losing points. I try to alter the seams first if the units seem too big or too small.
