I'm making my mom a quilt for her 80th b'day. right now it has 4 squares - let me back up - she has 4 daughters all married 3 with children 2 with grandchildren; dad died in 1997 just after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mother has had 2 husbands and several 'men' in her life since dad died. The one she is married to now is her exact opposite and to make a long story short we don't like the present husband they keep breaking up and we are really mad she hasn't divorced him but has taken him back - again - for the umteenth time. Ok enough venting. My delima is the theme of the quilt is family. I have 4 squares made one for each daughter with their children, grandchildren and even step children. I am including picture of the squares along with a 5th square that has the poem i'm using. I want to include my dad somewhere - they were married 50 years - but do not want to include all the other 'men' that have been in her life since dad died any suggestions on how to include my dad? actually I'm only putting pictures of 2 of the squares and the poem so you will get the idea. the plan is to put the poem in the middle and the other 4 squares around 9 squares all together with blue strips between the squares. the blue for the strips is the blue used on the flower with trevors name and the last picture included here please look and see if you can help thx

the poem

What if you tried to incorporate a family tree sort of thing. You could have a flower with your Mom and Dad, then tendrils leading to all the children, and more tendrils leading to their children.

Is there something about your father such as a hobby, favorite color, favorite season, favorite flower, anything that was special about him that you kids and your mom would recognize if you somehow put it in one or more of the squares? A special memory between the two of them? That way the memory would be there but not "in your face" so to speak against the other men in her life.
Your blocks so far are beautiful.

I'm not sure you'd want to do this, but I made a quilt for someone and his father was very absent in his life. he wanted his dad's picture on the quilt, but not really... so we ended up putting it on the back of the quilt. Just a thought. I'm sure you'd prefer to have your dad present on the front somewhere, but maybe it'll spark an idea from someone else.

Look, you have said it all in the poem, you are the flowers that have gathered to give your mother honor. You don't have to mention anyone else. 80 is mighty significant! With this lovely family on this lovely quilt, I think you give it elegance by not mentioning anything else. Maybe a happy 80 th somewhere, you when you note who did the quilt and the date and what the occasion is. Gosh, girl, you done a beautiful job. Congratulations. Ruth

Hm, why not make a Mom and Dad block and focus on the 50 years together? You could use a heart applique for Mom and Dad instead of the flowers.

Not sure what to do with Trevor ...Velcro??????
