Okay, lets see if I can help. When you purchase your fabric... it is folded. I buy one yard and use access on another pillowcase... perfect. One yard..minus 27 inches leaves 9 inches for the cuff on second case.
Now lay your fabric out as it was on the bolt.... fold on the left side. Measure down 27 inches and cut... leaving 9 inches. That seems to be your question. I have made dozens of these and they are sooooo much fun. Good luck.

Maybe seeing it done in photos will help? I like Missouri Quilt videos but had to resort to a photo tute for the pillow case.

your fold and selvedges become the long sides of the pillowcase. the cut ends become the hemmed (trimmed) and sewn ends.
Try laying your folded fabric on a pillowcase. Help you visualize. ...you said you "got it". Just making sure. :)

This is the pattern that I have used forever. I especially love the measurements. It is from Utah State university.
