This is not cotton batik. It is either rayon, but even then, it sounds like there was a manufacturing problem....should not be raveling this badly. Take it back

So is it the nature of batiks to do this or is it just poor quality fabric? I love batiks and would like to use them again. Thanks for your help.
I don't know what they sold you in the name of a batik,
but it is not a batik if it is ravelling. Batiks don't ravel :)

I love batiks, and have never had a problem like that. I use them all the time. They are my favorite. The only thing I find with batiks is that they are tightly woven and hand stitching is a little harder.

Is there a name on the selvage of the manufacturer and the name of the fabric? This might you identify what you really have in your possession.

I have never had a problem with batiks raveling. They usually are a denser cotton then regular quilting cotton. I'm not sure why you are having this problem. Make sure you use a fresh blade in your rotary cutter.

I want to thank all of for your replies to my fabric problem. I have since found out that it is not completely 100% cotton and not a true batik. It was made to resemble batik. I have learned that I must look closer at fabric content and to know what it is I am actually buying. I still love batiks and will continue to use them. This just wasn't one. I was so happy to find a purple fabric that wasn't feminine for my DGS graduation quilt (his favorite color) that I wasn't as careful as I usually am. Thank you again. :)

Wow! My LQS charges 10.95 a yard for batiks. They are of exceptional quality but........Whew! Some are worse than others. I just keep sewing. Once the quilt is quilted, it should be okay. Good luck.

I've never had a true batik ravel like that. I HAVE seen some fabrics that PRINTED with a batik design that were kind of ravel-ly, but were not true batiks. Maybe you got one of those.

Gosh I just sewed a 10 minute block quilt with some batiks and I had no problem......my only raveling, shedding problem was with Minkee.....oh boy.
I would take that back to the LQS and discuss it.
