Default Fort Bragg, CA Quilt Show

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the Ocean Wave Quilt Guild Quilt Show in Fort Bragg, CA.

Many lovely quilts. The 'docents' available were informative and helpful.

I do have to say that after seeing all these quilting projects that it gives me confidence to actually enter something I have made.

There was another quilt show guest that found it necessary to loudly 'dis' the quilt guild for their choice of blue ribbon winner. I'm not sure if the lady who was in her direct vicinity was with her, but she was directing many of her comments to her. Then, when the lady asked about a quilting machine recommendation she, again loudly, proceeded to pontificate about a particular machine.

I understand not agreeing, but I don't understand this woman's arrogance.

Did I critique the quilting projects entered? Yes. Did I share my observations with my friends? Yes. Did anyone OUTSIDE of this friend group HEAR what my observations were? No.

I felt badly for the quilt guild members who went to all the effort to put on the show.

I think, in the future, if this ever happens I won't turn away in embarrassment. I will, quietly, say something.

That is just awful that some people just have to draw attention to themselves like that - everyone is entitled to their own opinion - but when someone has to denegrate someone elses work - I think they have a flaw in their own work or character.
I am glad that you enjoyed the show otherwise - I love Fort Bragg and Mendocino - haven't been there for about 8 yrs or so - but have many memories of that area. Did you get any pics to post? Would love to see them.

You know, I don't love every quilt that I see at a quilt show. I don't think anybody does. Some quilts just aren't my cup of tea. And yes, sometimes there is a flaw in them. But I give all these quilters kudos for entering their work and they should be proud of the quilts that they made. I can totally appreciate all the love, sweat and tears that go into creating those quilts. Besides, I'm the one standing there, looking at THEIR quilts that THEY had the guts to enter in a show, not the other way around.

True! The guild went to lots of trouble to put on the show.

If you don't like it then leave, no one is twisting anyone's arm.

No photos...I was too busy enjoying the selections.

The Best of Show quilt was an elaborate machine quilted creation with an Asian flair. Not a traditional quilt, but superbly executed.

How mean and rude!!!! There was no reason for the arrogant Snip to talk so loudly and say such mean things. It was not right to hurt someone's feelings.

The "Quilt Police" strike again! I never second guess the judges because they get to examine quilts for flaws that a viewer just doesn't see. When viewing quilts my eyes sometimes see other quilts I like better but that is just my opinion and I keep it to myself.

Not that I am advocating that kind of behavior but there is the distinct possiblity the person speaking didn't realize how loudly she was talking. That happens to me very often. I have to be reminded to use my "inside voice". It is from decades of riding motorcycles without ear protection. My hearing is not so good so I speak loudly and don't even realize it.

I agree that the loud woman may not be aware that she is being heard by everyone in the surrounding county, but nevertheless it is rude to publicly disparage any quilt in a show. I am always grateful that quilters took the time to bring their quilts in for my viewing enjoyment. Guild shows are particularlly enjoyable, because the quilts shown are not always the perfect masterpieces that you see in the big shows. Those can be pretty intimidating.

I find that people like that are jealous so they feel like they have to bring others down to their level to feel good about themselves. I don't understand why people who don't like something can't just keep it to themselves instead of potentially hurting someones feelings by being rude
