Using glue on quilt tops
#21
Dumb question here...how do you use it on your quilts, other than to keep appliques in place? I get that one, as I have used fabric glue sticks, but the binding and for keeping seams in tact??? Do tell lol

I was turned onto the Elmers School Glue (or the generic) and glue sticks a few years ago and I don't know what I would ever do without it. When I use it for my bindings I set the school glue with the iron. I always wash my quilts before gifting and it washes right out.

A friend who uses a lot of glue told me the Avery is the best for glue stick, but says to get the one that says Made in Mexico, she swears there is a difference to the Avery made in other places. She wins at big national shows with her quilts, so I trust her recommendations. She also uses some Elmers school glue which she puts into a dispenser with a very tiny opening. Can't remember where she told me to get those, but it was one of the catalogs you get in the mail.

I only use archival glue sticks in my sewing/quilting projects so the threads won't break down over time. I use the sticks on the first fabric in paper piecing instead of pinning. I use it on some of my handbags, in situations where I need 3 hands, and for small bindings instead of pinning... a dab every few inches.

What a great idea. I have used Elmers or Staples glue stick in some of the embroidery and applique things I have done, but never thought about using it for quilting instead of dozens of pins. So glad I found the quilting board. Get new ideas almost every day. Thank you to the great experience on this board.
