Is there a specific reason why hand quilted and machine quilted blocks can not be used in the same quilt? There are some ladies in my Quild who only do handquilting and they seem to not join any projects maybe because the project seem to be geared to machine quilters. I want to include them in the challenge by saying that both blocks can be combined in the same quilt. Opinons??????

Since the top is usually assembled before quilting, it would be hard to combine both hand and machine quilting in one quilt. (I know QAYG is different, but it doesn't seem appropriate to use when hand quilting.) Are you referring to hand vs. machine piecing rather than quilting?

i quilted with a guild that did combine them if that was how they came. The hand pieced ones sometimes pull apart at the ends when they get stretched a bit. not an insurmountable issue. have the quilters do a double stitch at the end of seam

It is your quilt and I sometimes hand stitch then finish with machine. I use which method I feel like at the time. I break all rules because that is hat they are for,
If I was putting in a show would only use one way.

I think it is wonderful when the two are combined. I'd decide which parts are to handquilted, do the machine quilting so those spots are left open ( put painters tape around them, or use wash away thread to baste muslin over the top of the quilt areas to be hand quilted)....then after the machine quilting is done, turn it over to the hand quilters to do their thing. If you use wash away thread, the muslin could be "released" by wetting the area with water either sprayed or wiped on.

Is this a question about "piecing" or quilting? If you have guild members who do only hand piecing, they might not really be interested in machine pieced blocks; therefore not showing interest in the challenges.

I made a quilt with both hand quilting and machine quilting in it, and it looks just fine. I did machine stitch-in-the-ditch quilting around all the piecing in the body of the quilt, then handquilted feathers in the four borders. It was all exactly what was called for, imho.

My sampler quilts include both hand and machine quilted blocks.

i know lots of quilters who hand quilt some areas of a quilt- and machine quilt areas of their quilts when it works for the specific project- I see no reason to think it's not ok- there are lots of quilts out there that contain both hand and machine quilting.
