You could look at Sampler Quilts and take note of the settings used.
I keep a file of Sample Settings that I can go to for ideas when needed.

A friend had beautiful results when each block (from a block exchange) was framed with four triangles to make the blocks on point. All the framing was done in the same fabric, so that color unified all the different colored blocks. If the blocks are directional and you don't want the blocks on point, you can frame them this way twice, which puts them right side up again.

Here are some tops I've made out of random blocks using different sashing...
