Take a sheet of paper 12 inches square. Draw your quilt block design, whatever it is, on the paper, using a ruler for straight lines. Cut the pieces apart, and use a glue stick to stick them down, spaced well apart, on other paper. Then draw a line around the shape 1/4 away from your pattern piece. You can tape two pencils together to get the 1/4 spacing just right--one pencil follows your original drawn line (that is your stitching line) and the other pencil draws a new line (that is your cutting line) outside the shape. Cut out the new shaped pieces and use them to cut your fabric. If you are using templates, double sticky tape the new pattern to the plastic and cut it out. This works for triangles as well as squares and other shapes.
