If it is the right emblem then applique would really look amazing in the middle of the quilt. If you are not in a hurry i'll be happy to help you with the applique part.
The one you posted is for the Sons of the VFW. Need to change that if you are going to embroider it for a Vet.

Would this help as a center piece? There is another VFW flag made of rayon which might be difficult to sew. I think it was called an altar flag. Look under VFW/flags from the main page.

Or you might like this patriotic quilt which was in the Fons and Porter July/August 2010 issue which can still be purchased on their website
I see from that link that you can purchase a 12 x 15" flag. A quilt could be made around it.

Thanks everyone for your responses, If I use that nylon as maybe an applique, would it last in a lap quilt used for everyday? I really want to find something he can use everyday, and maybe I could use that as a wall hanging centerpiece.

If you are talking about the flag that I mentioned, it is made for flying on a car in the weather.

Here's qa suggestion. There are small panels from most of the services available out there, we have several. Take these and one like we had on a banner in classified section for the center and add red, white and blue fabric. That way it would represent all services.
