I have thought of doing a wall hanging quilt for above my fireplace, but my concern is that occassionally we have had smoke drift up from the fireplace and I don't know how dirty the quilt would get. Would that be a problem? I guess I could just wash it periodically, right?

This really fills the space we need. For you that worry about the fire: there will be none as our son in law is ashmatic.
So this is a smoke free house. Thank you for the help. I have learn a lot from the quilting board and all you swell
