There was an article in our local newspaper that our Walmart was going to decide by January whether or not to keep the fabric section. I think I'll swing by tonight to check it out.

Generally with Walmarts....if they currently have fabric they will keep it until they schedule a remodel. Once the remodel comes, they'll get rid of it.

I think Walmart put a lot of these places out of business...and then forgot their customer base.

I only have one Walmart left that has fabric left And that is not much.

i think that a lot of fabric places, big and small, just can't compete with online stores. after all, online stores don't even need to be a store. they can just be a warehouse to reach hundreds of thousands of people. and who can compete with the selection? most of them do take back cut pieces, but you still pay for s + h. both ways. plus you don't get to feel the fabric. the big stores don't care about that. it's all bottom line. think about it: how many sewers are there in your immediate community? it's cheaper now to buy clothing made in china and tiawan (sp?) than to make it and proportionately few people quilt.

i hate online shopping and i hate joann's, but i buy online and only buy from joann's with a good coupon.

They are opening a super Wal-mart here and are getting rid of the fabric dept. And it is always busy. I was told they are getting rid of all fabric depts., but hope that is not true. Will have to see if there are any sales going on. Didn't see any the other day. May end up doing more shopping on line.

I have to shop on line for fabric and I don't like it much. I like to GO to the fabric store and feel and smell my way through it....AAAAHHHHH, now thats a good day!

When I first heard that Walmart was phasing out the fabric, I asked the girl at our local store. She said, "Oh, no, we aren't going to!" Of course, a year later the fabric was gone in this store. Then I heard when the store remodels, the fabric dept. goes. I won't be surprised in another year or 2 there will be no fabric in any Walmart. To bad. I buy a lot from there from the quilts I do for charity & other things.

Our local WalMart actually posted a letter that said their fabric department would not be closing. We have only the WalMart plus two quilt shops within 90 miles of here. And with the quilt shops asking $8+ a yd for their fabric, it makes it really hard to buy decent fabric at a decent price.

The town is working hard to get a Super WalMart in here. Supposedly they will break ground in January. I have mixed thoughts about that. It would be nice to give the local grocery stores some competition as they seem very high to me (Albertsons and Stater Brothers only). But since Mervyns closed, we have no other place to buy clothes except a small K-Mart.

I hope they have a gas station as we are still paying $2.19 a gallon. :evil:

I work for walmart and it is true that eventually they are phasing out the fabrics dept in all of them. Ours was phased out with our remodel. It doesnt' matter if you have a shop in town or not for the competition. In my town we have nothing but a walmart and krogers to shop and they still done away with it. So enjoy while you have it, I know we miss ours and get alot of complaints.

So far Phoenix still has fabric but they have started to change the name of the dept. so it wont be long.
