I Figured Something Out Today
I do not like making log cabin blocks. Yes, they are a classic block, they make a great looking quilt, and are a favorite of many quilters. Just not me. I recently bought the Creative Grids log cabin ruler which I was hoping to use with a fabric collection I have. After fiddling with several practice blocks both with and without using the ruler I've decided to abandon that plan and find another pattern. Which patterns have you admired but found you don't enjoy making?
BTW, the CG ruler didn't work very well for me. I got better results without. Anyone else have that experience?

Oh yeah, been there done that, tried both sizes and didn't like either one. I usually paper piece my log cabins, but after trying the CG rulers and being disappointed with both, I'll just keep to using pping.

Search Jacquelynne Steves - she has a "wonky, sort of log cabin" house block pattern. It is so cute. Doesn't matter if it's a bit off. I agree, paper piecing is the only way to get perfect log cabin blocks. they do make a real nice quilt.

I think making any blocks has to do with the way we sew them. After making 140 Flying Geese blocks, I'd say I don't like them much right now. But I know its because of the way I was sewing them: the flip method. I have Eleanor Burns templates and they work great and I didn't use them, sigh. I have always loved making Log Cabin blocks, but I do know to be very careful sewing those logs together. I made one disappearing 9 patch out of some donated blocks and I'm not overly crazy how they turned out, but if I remember right, the 9 patches weren't all that great. So back to what I said, I think how we sew them can be a big turnoff and how many we have to make at one time also.

I made some of Jenny's Disappearing Pinwheel #5 blocks and took some extra pieces along for show and tell. That's when I found I had some of the pinwheels turned the wrong way. But we found a way to put them together that makes something really cute. I used that pattern in my latest quilt.
Mistakes are what make new things happen. Jenny's Disappearing Hour Glass is another example of that. Someone put the pinwheel together the wrong way and Jenny found a new way to do it.
