It does make a quick quilt and especially when you are a beginner is great for the speed and the use of fat quarters which it seems most of us have. My first year qulting I made 4 Turning Twenties quilts in a week for my kids at the last minute. I didn't have the pattern but looked at it and figured out how to use up the fq doing it. Worked great.

This has certainly been an interesting thread! I personally made a YBR a few years ago for a granddaughter's wedding gift. They picked the pattern because they wanted something "rustic" looking. We did it in homespun fabrics in various maroon checks, plaids and solids. It looked like something you'd expect in a log cabin, and they loved it.

The quilts by "Wunder-Mar" on page 5 of this thread certainly prove it's anything but a boring pattern! You just have to use a little imagination!

You are correct in one sense. it is a pattern to purchase, but it is easy and can be very attractive when made up. There are plenty of easy quilts in magazines and free on the internet. But there are some of us who would do the Yellow Brick Road as a quick quilt that makes good use of fabrics, and there are those that are stuck on those Bow Tucks Bags. to each their own, I would say.
I am a huge YBR fan - I have made at least a dozen, and a few of them were from block not used in the other quilts. It's a contemporary look that lends itself to so many fabric choices and palettes. I agree with every reason listed by YBR Fans.

Thank you for sharing your great quilts. I especially appreciate the first one as the lights show the patterns so well.

I can see why it wouldn't appeal to you, and probably
many others, but that pattern has been around for something
like 15-20 years. I don't know when it actually came out,
but I am guessing in the mid to late 90's. It is still a number
one best seller, and I think every quilt shop in America
carries it. The designer, Terry Atkinson, said that she was
able to put her kids through college on the sales of that
pattern alone. It is a very simple pattern, but every pattern
designer wishes they could come up with a pattern that
'hits', like that one and the Turning Twenty patterns have.
I know the designer of the Turning Twenty series, and those
patterns will carry her well into retirement and beyond. :)
Wow, I like this history... I've been reading the comments and it seems like about half love it and the others don't. For those who really love it, it would be so great to see some of the results that you really loved. If you have them, would you post your pictures?

I don't like the Turning Twenty because the patches are too big for my taste. even though they seem to be similar.
Now this is one of the first I have seen that I actually like. Great job! Thanks for posting.

I have this book too and it's one of my favorites. That's mainly because I've used that phrase so many times when I'm looking at my fabrics with either gorgeous prints, or large patterns that I love. The book is a big help for times like that. 8-)
Now this I love! Would consider buying the book too. Funny...learning what appeals to different people...so interesting.
