Default what is the best hand embroidery needle ?

What do you think is the best needle for using with 2 strands of embroidery thread?
Betweens or sharps, and what size?
Thanks for all replies.

When I was doing cross stitch, I used a blunt needle that would hold the threads I wanted. I would split the DMC to three because I like the coverage. I do not remember the brand name, but I am sure that most any would serve well. I am guessing that you are doing this by hand. If it is a machine, I am at a loss because I do not have one. I hope this helps you.

i use embroidery needles- usually a size 9 or 10; they have an oval-long eye making it easy to thread the needle and not fray the thread- sharps and betweens have tiny round eyes---made for single sewing threads- not really ideal for embroidery floss.

I use whatever I can thread! I'm taking a refresher class in a week or so and I'm sure I will learn a lot. Maybe then I can help answer your question. :0)

I teach hand embroidery at a local quilt shop and have been doing a lot of hand embroidery for five years. The best needles (hands down) are available at www.redworkplus.com. Bird Brain and Crabapple Hill also offer these needles on their websites. They are the only needle I know of that is tapered from the tip to the eye. These needles are awesome not just for embroidery but for everything. They come in a matchbook sort of container. Try these, you'll not go back!

I like John James Embroidery needles. I think I use a 10 or 11 size for 2 strands of embroidery floss or 12 wt. cotton thread.

I use a nine because that is what I bought but think a 10 might be better. I usually use three strands but find that two work better on some fabric. I love hand embroidering.
