Make some potholder and mug rug and practice your FMQ on something small. Then they can always be given away as gifts to friends.
That's a good idea but any fusible will work EXCEPT NOT on polyester batting....it melts.

In the past I would sew my batting pieces together either by hand or machine but now I use the batting tape or strips of light weight fusible interfacing. It is so much quicker and I get a smoother finish.

Make sure your edges are straight, butt them up and zigzag.

I have used a zigzag stitch on my regular sewing machine till I purchased the iron-on batting tape. Got a great deal when it was on sale plus they goofed and gave me an even large roll of it at that time. Just don't over lap the seams when you put them together. You'll have a lump.

When I chop off a section of batting from a freshly quilted top, I usually go ahead and tape it to a piece I've been adding to so its not just laying around. I then measure the entire piece and pin it to the batting and hang it up so I know how large it is.

I love Heat Press batting tape. I will never hand stitch or zig zag again. Even with or without dense quilting, you will never be able to feel where it was ironed together.

I was going to recommend butting pieces of batting up against one another and then using a zig zag stitch to stich them together, then I read through your post again. You could easily just whip stitch the pieces together, it will work just as well, as I have done that in the past as well.

I recommend seam tape also; for practice, it's quicker than hand sewing, since your machine doesn't zig zag.

I just butt the pieces together (maybe even a slight overlap) and just continue quilting, but I do make sure the quilting will be stitching over that area. I don't use anything to adhere the pieces together.
