My local quilt store is discontinuing Mettler threads and stocking Aurafil in neutral colors and Supior Masterpiece in colors. Actually, I have never really thought about threads before, just went with whatever they had. I am used to Mettler silk finish threads and they seemed just fine. Aurafil and Superior seem to break easier and they are only 2 ply. What do you think?

For piecing I like neutral 100% cotton. Guttermann is what I'm using now only because I bought a lot on sale and it sews great. I also like the Sulky long staple cotton. I have found the Coats and Clark varigated thread is very good too. My next thread to try is the King Tut thread, everyone at my guild raves about it.

Thanks for the replies.
I found a site that sells thread cheaper than I can buy locally. It is still cheaper even after paying the $3 postage fee. I haven't tried it yet but will let you know when I do.

I think I will try the King Tut threads for piecing. Even though it is 40 wt and 3 ply, it doesn't feel too thick to me.

Ya,
I just picked up a couple of King Tut's spools. I had planned on using them for quilting, not piecing. I'll letchall know what I think when I do. For piecing, I use Mettlier silky finish, I have done most of my quilting so far with Sulky. I do like the feel of 40 wt. for quilting, it gives a presence the lighter threads don't.

My local quilt store discontinued Mettler silk finish thread so I can't buy it locally. The King Tut seems to be as strong as Mettler but feels a bit thinner. They seem to sew about the same. In my opinion, the 2 ply threads are not strong enough for piecing; they break fairly easy when I pull on them, except, I did like the YLI 2 ply threads for piecing but they discontinued that thread too. They only carry Aurifil in neutral colors and Superior Masterpiece in cream.
