What thoughts go into selecting a backing for your quilts? Light color? Dark color? Patterns? Solids? Why?

I like to pick something in the same color family, usually a print, it's more forgiving. I like to make the back pretty too, that way it's reversible.

If the quilt is for a child, which usually means being dragged everywhere, I'll most often use a print in a coordinating color, either flannel or fleece.

For large quilts I look for flat sheets on clearance or at yard sales or thrift stores.

I usually stay in the same color family also, however it depends on how I'm going to quilt it. If I'm hand quilting I may use a color that will show the quilt better. as much as i love to make the quilts I LOVE looking at the quilting.

I usually try to find a complimentary color. I have a tendency to go for TOT but that's only because I like them. I'll also use prints or plain - just depends on the quilt and what I can find that says 'buy me'.

i typically go with a solid color and a wide back so it isn't pieced.

i like for the back of my quilts to look like a whole cloth quilt from all the quilting on it.

its like getting 2 quilts in one.

i hand dye all my quilt backs

So far I have been considering who the quilt is for and then try to think about their tastes. That would probably be different if I were making them for sale instead of for gifts.

It depends on what is on the front and who it is for. If it is for children, I try to do something durable with color. If the front has a theme, I try to go with that. I also like to try and stay with the color theme from the front, but not always. If I have a material that just screams "I remind you of...", I usually use that no matter what is on the front.
