Thank you all so much for your thoughts and comments... input from others always helps me "process" I have decided to change the width of the sashing - - but I also went with a completely different color for the sashing. burgundy!! in the picture the fabric looks more red than it actually is.. and I only have the blocks sitting on the fabric so the sashing between each blocks is not accurate... but I am much happier with this set up

The burgundy definitely makes it more masculine and for some reason, seems to brighten it up as well.

The off white looked good until you did the burg. I think that looks best. The dark in the 1st pic would have been wrong for your quilt. Best wishes to your nephew.

I agree with the ones suggesting a wider sashing between the sets. Love the original quilt but it was more colorful, making it easy to see the sets of 4, the black sets it off. But you are using more darks that I think I would like it with a wider sashing between the sets of 4. Neat idea--one I would like, quick and easy!

Ooooo--I like it with the red! Not as stark as the white.
