I'm VERY new to quilting - in fact the only things I've made are a table runner and a wall hanging (a Sampler in a class) and the last thing is a Rag Quilt.

My rag quilt turned out nice - I used denim on one side and flannel (shirts, robes, pajamas, etc from Thrift store) for the backing. I knew I didn't need batting with the flannel and denim but I was told that I could put some of flannel I cut up in as batting to create more color on the fluffy fringe. I did that and liked the look. I tried to use mostly light colored flannel to offset the darker colors on the outside.

Now my question.....I am making another one and using denim on the outside and some colorful cotton blocks for the backing. I would like the added color for the fringe and wonder if it would be okay to use muslin for the batting. It would be white with the colors of the cotton for the fringe - or would muslin not work for the fraying?

    Thanks for any help.

    Pat

Not sure, but I believe the muslin would ravel. You sure get a lot of loose strings when pre-washing!LOL

Muslin shrinks!! A couple of hot pre wash and dries will take care of that.

yep- do it. I would pre-wash your muslin first though. and be sure to get a high thread count muslin. you'll loose too much from the ravel otherwise. post pictures I would love to see your finished project.

I love the idea of adding extra fabric for more color on the edges :D:D:D

or inexpensive white flannel would also work well for the (batting) to add a little more to your (fringe). aren't raggy quilts fun? and every one loves getting them...

I can't think of why it wouldn't work and the extra fringe would look neat. Show us when you're done.
