I believe it is the quilt top before it is layered and quilted.

for some unknown reason some people have been calling their quilt tops 'flimsy's --- I don't get it, it seems kind of 'negative' ... but I guess that is just what some have decided their quilt tops are.

Not an American term. Origin is from the English. It seems to be catching on in the US though as I have heard it being used for several years now.

I just recently became aware of the word flimsy, but I am glad you asked because it confirms that my guess was right. I just call that my quilt top.

Just quilter slang for the unquilted top. No big deal. I was all kinds of confused when I was in Ireland and my friends referred to sweaters as jumpers. They thought sweater was a horrible word for clothing ;-)

Jumpers are what we called dresses meant to be worn over a blouse with buttoned shoulders!

P.S. I too see the term "flimsy" as a negative and I sure didn't know it meant a quilt top.

I see the word as a noun rather than an adjective. Just a component. Much like some people use the word wadding instead of batting.

I like the lyrical aspect of the word. Rhymes with whimsy. yeah, I'm weird ;-)
