Default What is a row by row?

On the forum I keep seeing people mention that they are starting or doing a row by row or that they are collecting something for it while out of town.

What is it? I don’t think it is something we have here in the UK a I have never heard of it before.

I just learned about it recently when I posted about a road trip I'll be taking next month. Here is a link that explains it all: https://rowbyrowexperience.com/rxr-program-page/

Basically, each participating shop has a pattern you can collect for free, which would be one row of a final quilt. You can just collect the patterns (looks like the theme changes each year) to make a quilt, or you can compete in a contest-- be the first to complete a quilt and present it to a participating store and win a pile of fat quarters.

I have no desire to compete, but am looking forward to being able to pick up some free patterns this year. I got my first one at Cool Cottons in Portland, OR, on Sunday, which has windchimes with mountains on the bottom.

My understanding is that a "row by row" quilt is one in which there is a row of a particular block, then a row of different block and so on. Check out Pinterest and put "row quilts" into the search slot. There are some really creative ones to see.

There are various types of row by rows (as described below) but basically it’s like a block of the month (week) but the block (or row of blocks) is the width of the quilt and a certain height. (Heights might vary and you stack them on top of each other to make the full quilt. Kind of like a ladder.

Hi RJ!

From what you are describing you are hearing about the row by row experience on the link Sleepy Hollow gave you. It has become an international event that runs from June 21st through September 4th. Each year has a different theme and you can collect free patterns from participating shops and many offer kits for purchase. After Sept. 4th, the patterns will not be available until (I think) Nov 1st sometimes at a cost. You have to physically go to the shop to pick up the pattern. If you complete a quilt (8) stores and are the 1st to take it into a shop you can win a prize. It's a fun opportunity to visit different shops that you may not normally go to. There is a link on the web site that will take you to the map, you will see several countries listed including England. (direct link: https://rowbyrowexperience.com/store-finder/

There are usually a few threads here on the QB and Facebook that you can see what others are doing. If you search row by row here I'm sure you'll find many past threads. If nothing else it's something fun to look into.

Thanks everyone. It sounds interesting and I can see why it is popular over there with you.
