For some reason, don't know why, I always buy 5 yards. So far it has been ok. I've used different sized pieces for the backing. When I buy specifically for backing it's 6 or 7 yards. My problem is, I often change my mind on what the backing should look like. You can call me creative or wishy-washy.

What is the rule of thumb when buying fabric--6 yards?
Thanks.
that's what I always buy. I've found its just about the right amount and if there is any left, that's a bonus for something scrappy!!

Darned if I know. I always buy a minimum of three yards, if I absolutely love it I'll buy as much as I can afford.

I usually make my quilts dual sided. That way I can piece and use up some of my goodies on the back side. That way they both look pretty.

Lately I have economized by purchasing many of the backs for my quilts from Connecting Threads clearance fabricd # 3.07 a yard. It certainly hurts ny wallet less.

Depends upon the size, but I get 8 yards, because it is Ok to have some left over, and just perhaps I might like an extra border or binding .
