My definition of a couch quilt: long enough to cover my feet and ears and wide enough to completely cover me when I turn over.
My favorite one is about 85 inches long and 65 inches wide. I was 5'3" and 215 pounds.

Interesting topic, I both quilt and cook large. Find it hard to make just one reasonable portion...
My natural design sense/inclination is for rectangular queen sized bed projects. Even for twin sized I still want about 90" in length. It is almost impossible for me to design within baby sizes, mine are definitely more crib than travel sized. And then although I did it once as a challenge, it is almost impossible for me to design within preemie sizes.
For couch or comfort size, again I still prefer rectangular but am more open to square. I think I'm going for a minimum of 6 ft (72 inches), think a wingspan or how far out your arms can reach, with about 4 ft (48 inches) in depth.

I measure the couch from arm to arm and add 12" for good measure. Width is a little trickier for me, I'm think 2.5 times the width of the couch cushion. Some couches are deeper than others, so on those 3 x the couch cushion.

best for me is about 5' x 7'.
as i'm nearly 6 feet tall and **** tons, that's good for a foot covering wrap-around.

I normally make my lap quilts or for you sofa quilts oversized as I want it to cover my feet completely and up to my neck plus wide enough to cover me and any kitty that thinks she/he needs to lay on top of me. So most times I shoot for at least 55-60 wide x 65-70 long.

"Personal Quilts" - love that, by the way! I'm making "Personal Quilts" for our local infusion center and as I'm just starting with this type of donation, I'm thinking 44 - 48" by 60" This way they are not so oversized that they are bulky or in the way, but still a nice cover up to chase the chill away.
