Maybe your top tension is too tight....If your needle hole is too big it can shred the thread...what kind and size are you using? Did you try rethreading your machine? What do you have in the bobbin? What kind of thread are you using in the top?

Sewers Aid on the thread might help. I have to put it on older, dried out thread & it really helps me. I let several lines drip down the spool and soak in for a bit before I start.

I always use a topstitch needle when quilting, it works great on everything so far and is a little heavier. You need to lengthen you stitch and SLIGHTLY loosen you top thread

Any time the thread breaks, if you are sure you have good thread, the machine is clean and threaded correctly, change to a larger needle. That always solve my problem.

The last one I did I used a 12 ball point needle and didn't have any trouble. Make sure you evenly distribute the weight as that will affect the tension on your thread and cause it to break.

T-shirt quilts are a challenge to quilt. Don't quilt, if possible, over the stiff design. I try to quilt around it.

the tread is gutterman and is the same on the top and bottom. the only difference is the color. tenison is fine I am thinking because of the heaviness of the fabric i might need to go to a heaveier needle? What do you recommend?
