Default What thread to use for hand quilting

I'm repairing a hexie flimsy I found when I cleaned out the garage fabric stash. Lol, completely forgot I had it. I'm using regular old Coats and Clark All Purpose thread (which I just noticed is 100% polyester,) and the thread the original quilter used looks much thicker. Did they use "hand quilting thread" back then? This might be from before the 50's, judging from the fabric. But they might have been using old fabric. Its cool, some of the hexies are pieced, to make the fabric last. I'll try to post some pictures, I can hear you thinking about wanting them clear over here, lol.

I use thread specifically for hand quilting. It's thicker than regular thread.

Hand Piecing I use either Aurifil 50 wt. or silk thread- I want a fine, smooth thread so my stitching does not show.
threads have come a long way over the years, 50 years ago there wasn’t much to choose from.

For hand piecing, I use a 40 wt. thread (King Tut by Superior Threads) as suggested by Jinny Beyer.
