Right now, I am using a Prescencia 60/3 thread. It has the strength of 3 plys, but is finer than 50 weight. I don't know anyone who uses 40 weight for piecing.

40 wt is heavier thread. In my opinion is too thick/ heavy for piecing.i sometime use 40wt for machine quilting or even hand quilting if it is a color I want to use.i usually piece with 50wt thread.

I don't really pay attention to the weight of thread. Most labels have come off the spools. I just pick by the color but, mainly use off white the most.

40 wt thread is usually used for machine quilting when you want the thread to show up. It's too thick for piecing.
The thread weight and ply determines what size needle to use. 50 wt 3 ply is thicker then 50 wt 2 ply. But fine piecing thread is much different then regular run of the mill thread in thickness and smoothness even if the same wt. Thread education is key to successful sewing and machine quilting.
