Default What is your favorite needle for machine quilting?

Just curious what everyone prefers - topstitch needle, universal, quilting? What size? I know that a Microtex is great for batiks. Thanks all!

I usually use a universal needle, size 14. I have some organ brand needles, but usually use Schmetz. I use the Organ needles more for machine embroidery.

I have just starting using topstitch #14 needles and I love them!! You need to try a package to see the difference. the only issue is my self threader on the janome and pfaff and viking doesn't work with the elongated needle hole, but the needle is very easy to thread by hand.

I am one of those "bad people" who rarely changes a needle unless it breaks. Even for FMQ. So far so good.

I use a 90/14 topstitch needle. In my machines the thread frays in standard needles. The topstitch needle has a really big eye. Works great for me.

I really like topstitch needles for quilting. I match the size to the size of thread I'm using so I use #12, #14 and sometimes #16.

I also use a 90 topstitch needle. But sometimes I use a denim needle for heavier quilts. The groove is larger on the needle shaft to accommodate the weight and draw on the fabric.

Keeping that info in mind, if you were to fmq with a 50 weight cotton (like Connecting Threads Essentials), what needle size would coordinate? I also get so confused about needles and what size to use.

Hi Rose,
The sewing stores often have a free little card with the needle sizes and thread weights on them. But, you can print one off from the needle manufacturer's site.

I use Topstitch 80/12 with Essential Thread but I don't FMQ so I don't know if that makes
any difference.
