I used to teach English smocking and my first lesson would be about fabrics...what to use, what not to use, etc....I agree that "student" needs to be familiar with sewing machine. When I took my first, and only, quilting class at a local LQS I only learned when I did something wrong which was so frustrating....SO frustrating that I haven't been back to that shop as a customer much less as a student !

I love to start with string blocks. no worries about seams as they get used to the machine.

FIRST------- find out for sure if she wants to piece or wants to quilt a prepared top.

"Quilt" covers a good area.
