Need Help with Strip and Diamond Sizes
I want to make a Lone Star quilt with a log cabin background. The cutting instructions use 1 7/8". I was wondering if I made all rectangles for the log cabin and diamonds for the star 2", would they piece together properly. I am pretty sure the log cabin will but have no idea about the diamonds for the lone star. The log cabins and star pieces are independent of each other. Any help would be appreciated.

Sailorwoman, if you are planning something like this I would not make that change:

The reason it's a problem is because half of your increases on the lone star are on the diagonal, making the real increase .088402 instead of .125 (1/8"). Since all your log cabin increases are on the straight, it's increases will all be the full 1/8".
That's the math reason you should not change your cutting dimensions.

I agree with popover. The difference in size would be minimal and making the inner border a little wider will help to fit. Also you may just need to adjust your needle position to have a slightly larger than 1/4" seam allowance.

You can also adjust the setting blocks around the Lone Star, as well as adjusting the border around it.
You will probably also need to adjust your fabric purchases as well, if buying all new fabrics for this.
I don't blame you for wanting to adjust the measurements... when a pattern calls for 7/8, 3/8, etc., I round it up and figure it out from there. I have enough headaches with "regular" measurements, sometimes. I'd rather figure the math than strain my eyes trying to cut that extra eighth inch.
