Why does everyone wash their quilt as soon as the last stitch is completed?

I sure would be unhappy to come up with a bleeding fabric at this stage of the game!!!Originally Posted by grammy6

I am not the greatest quilter, but I wash all the fabric in warm water (each color separate with a color catcher). And let it shrink.
When it is finished I wash the quilt in warm water with another color catcher. If the color catcher has any color on it I send a box of color catchers with it and washing directions.
I use warm and natural/white batting.
It does shrink to a nice crinkly look.
Anyone else do this?

Some how my reply wasn't published so I'll try again!! I never wash mine. No food or drinks in the area. Wash hands and NO hand lotion! If and when I give mine away, I include washing instructions.

I wash all materials before I even sew. Although like you I have to admit I do like the new look and feel of material :) and as others say, after you sew the first and grim as well as finding mistakes come out. happy quilting. :)

My quilts never touch the floor. I pin them on tables at church, quilt in a frame, and the may by accident touch the floor when I unpin them from the frame, but that doesn't make them dirty. It is clean.

pet hair. no way to get away from it in my home. 2 dogs 3 cats all of whom find a way to get into and onto everything. also good to find out if any bad seams :-)

Well, NOT everyone--I do not wash mine. If the receivers wants to wash them, more power to them, but I'm only in the making business not the washing business. :)Originally Posted by cmagee84
I love the feeling of new! New anything, so I hesitate to wash my quilts. I think I am afraid they won't look as good once they are washed. I know that sounds weird. I have one that is going to a friend and I keep trying to make myself wash it, but no luck so far!
