I will buy an extra fat quarter if I need all of the yard. I haven't had a problem with running short with four though.

I buy 1/8 yard of fabric for when I do scrappy charity quilts. I ONLY by 1/2 yd if I have to (online stores) or if I absolutely love it. I don't normally buy fat quarters because you pay more than 1/4 yd cut. Always having to pinch pennies.

I have yet to understand lots of things, but why other people do this, that, or the other doesn't even come close to being on my list of things to worry about. LOL To each their own!!

I am like you, never bought fat quarters, but all my quilts were not scrappy---each one used 3-6 different fabrics in yardage cuts. HOWEVER I have recently made a string quilt and am now working on a colorful wonky log cabin quilt and see the need for lots of variety in small quantities like FQs. So I really think it depends on the pattern and the type of quilts you like to make.

fat quarters work great for applique, small bags, machine embroidery, and fat quarter quilts, it really depends how many you have quilt wise but not so much for appliques and bag making

I love the variety with fat quarters, especially in a single color. For example I can have a lot of cream coloured options for one scrappy looking background.

I have stopped as well, except for some reproduction fq's that i picked up for a quilt I am planning. I hate not having enough fabric to do anything with. A fellow board member did me a nice favor, so I thanked her with ten of them out of my stash. I hope she can use them. I have plenty of scraps to do scrappy quilts. I buy yardage now.

For me, I love the variety and have been lucky in the fact that my LQS used to have FQ sales where they were much less expensive than the same amount of yardage. I do some scrap quilts and some not. But FQs allow me to have a large stash variety without a large cost.

Of course I also have some regular yardage too. If I buy too big of pieces, I seem to always end up with small pieces to use in scrap quilts anyway, but not enough that I don't need to supplement with FQs!
