As I see this quite often, I am wondering why people make the mug rugs in a rectangular shape? Is it just to show a particular pattern??? I have wondered that since a coaster is typically a square.

Thanks in advance for explaining this!

I think it is because they are meant to hold a snack beside the mug!

A snack, or a spoon. I've Also seen many where there's a pocket for a teabag. There's no real pattern, you can make them any shape you like. I have some left over hexagonal blocks I was going to use.

Because if it were square....it would be called a coaster!

(I don't know the real reason either!)

How about this one. You don't really need a pattern. Saw it online somewhere.

I think most people do them rectangular so that it fits a mug and a little space for a snack as others have mentioned. We have a great tutorial on QB for making mapleleaf ones and there are other shapes out there on the web. There are no rules on what shape to do, do what you want!

Some folks consider the mug rug an overgrown coaster -- I'm thinking it's a mini-placemat! Need room for those bedtime snacks!

The maple leaf one mentioned is great and a way to use up small pieces.
