That is how my Grmother made tied quilts.....using a gray wool blanket for the batting.She "birthed the quilt...meaning she put top batting & binding together.....leaving a good size open place to turn rt side out.She sewed opening closed,then tied the quilt & yes...very warm.Today, I would sew around all edges,then tie.

I made a quilt for my son several years ago, used a thinnish wool blanket as the batt (the blanket had been washed); regular cotton fabric for the back. I though the blanket might be itchy - thus having a back.
It was machine quilted.
He's had it for years,been thru the washing machine/dryer cycle many times, probably on hot - holding up very well

My grandmother told me that my great grandmother used old wool blankets for batting...I do have some of those quilts, although I've never opened them up to see whats inside.
