It Works Both Ways!
We often chat about things that were't really designed for quilting that we use.
This evening, DH asked for help cutting (vinyl) replacement window screen. That stuff has a life of its own! His suggestion was to hold it against the frame and, using scissors, cut around the outside. The problem is, the roll it comes on is exactly wide enough for two frames - so if you cut around the outside of the frame, you've lost too much to do another piece side by side. Plus, it slips all over, so getting a straight cut is nigh unto impossible.
I came in, got one of my mats, an acrylic ruler, and a rotary cutter. Still had to be careful (the slipping around makes a straight, even cut difficult!), but got the next 4 cut pretty darn fast!
Now my problem is that he has seen me using these tools on HIS things; I'm a little concerned he'll take them out and start trying to do it on his own. He's not the most careful or gentle with tools...

Yes, get him his own. My husband admired my cutting mat and rotary cutter, thinking both might be handy for cutting out balsa wood as he designs and builds radio control model airplanes. I agreed and bought him his own....I think I got his at Tuesday Morning? We are both happy campers, plus he has found he can use rotary blades that no longer cut fabric well. I am not sure what he cuts with them, either blueprints or balsa wood, but I love just passing them on to him. (They store perfectly in a mushroom jar....more recycling. I love it!)

Get him a Kevlar safety glove. I can use an exacto very well to cut almost anything (design classes) The other half cut himself using one when trying to cut some cardboard to a specific shape. I had a Kevlar glove I bought for the mandoline cutter and told him to use it. Now he won't cut anything without it.
I bought a Martelli mat and saved the large Olfas for cutting mat board, so he always has a mat available.
