I made a quilt for my boyfriend when I was in college and used courdoroy for the backing. ( in the 70's quilt fabric was not so easy to find that was not feminine) He only would use it in the dead of winter as he said it was very heavy and very HOT ( he said it went way past warm).
The weight of it made it really hard to quilt ( no walking feet then). I gave up and tied it , but I remember having to use pliers to pull the needle thru.

I made several quilts last year for my family from flannel and corduroy as the backing. Most of the corduroy I used was fine wale, very soft and yielding but I also has a wide wale or two. It can make a great quilt backing. Corduroy softens with washings.

When I was a little girl I had a pink cordoroy quilt I loved it. There was a clothing factory where I lived and 2 times a year they opened the dorrs and sold not cloths but the fabric they made them with. Fabric that was SUPER wide They had the softest cordory in pink. I bought it an back a quilt for my DD. I love it.
As for your quilt being too heavy I don't think it will be if you don't use batting. However I myself would use batting the person is not going to be overseas forever.

I used pieces of corduroy from sewing clothing for my children years ago to make the backing of a quilt. The top was old drapes and no batting, we used it for years as a picnic blanket and it stayed in the car, ready to be used. We have used corduroy squares for a quilt top too, will last forever whether used on top or bottom. Use it up and give it a second life.
