Yin Yang Quilting Block
Ok, my daughter is a bit of a hippy. She loves peace signs and tie dye.
I thought it would be fun to make her a quilt made out of different 6" blocks representing peace and balance.
Little did I know that it's hard to find free quilting patterns for that type of thing.
So I broke down and made my own.
I made this yin yang design by tracing some free clip art and creating an applique.
It turned out pretty well don't you think?
I like the feel of the black and white on top of the blue. It creates that feel of earth and ocean. I didn't originally intend to do that, but it works.
I'm looking forward to finishing the quilt with blocks of different appliques. I can't wait to see her face when she gets it.
This is going to be a 3 block by 3 block (total of 9 blocks) wall hanging for her room.
The only thing I'm having a bit of trouble with is what should the other blocks be? I'm already doing one with a piece sign, but I need at least 7 more blocks to finish it out. I don't really want to repeat a design.
Can anyone help me with more ideas? I want to keep with the theme.
Thanks everyone. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Great appliqué! I came across a double happiness quilt block that you might consider.

I love your color choices! Very nice!
Here are a few ideas I found:
http://quiltinspiration.blogspot.com...1_archive.html scroll down to THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012 - Peace on Earth
http://www.nydailynews.com/life-styl....950858?pgno=1 – you could do each child in a different tie-dye shirt!
http://nonniequiltingdreams.wordpres...ng-with-color/ - balance of color
http://nonniequiltingdreams.wordpres...ythm-homework/
http://mariaacevedo.com/sketches/sun-and-moon/ - would make a nice compliment to your Yin-Yang
I agree with Nanny -- show us your blocks as you go! Good Luck!

When scrolling down to the peace on earth cherisews' first idea, I noticed a butterfly quilt on the side. You know "butterflies are free" -- so I suggest a butterfly block. Kathy

You can google for kanji (Chinese/Japanese writing) symbols. I found the one for peace. http://www.clker.com/clipart-2813.html

I love the one with the cranes on December 26, 2012. I suggest starching the heck out of a piece of fabric and actually doing an origami crane to make a dimensional block. My mom always told me that the cranes would keep the bad spirits away. As she was Japanese, I always believed her and have one sitting on my desk at work. LOL

How about a Dove,
Olive branches -maybe in a circle like the wreath of the original Olympics,
two fingers making a v from the WWII symbol that was later adopted by the hippies.
the words peace and balance
tight rope walker (for balance)
Heart
Daisies
or a wreath of daisies entertwined with olive leaves/branches

did you want some pieced blocks as well as applique?
Bright Hope
Money wrench or snails trails would also compliment the ying yang. (And you don't have peace when there is a monkey wrench in your plans.)
