I seldom use white or cream. My favorite for a long time has been Fossil Fern in light colors that complement the color scheme of my quilt project. They just blend so beautifully. The pattern was made in an infinite number of colorways.

I make most of my quilts to be used and enjoyed. White background makes it less usable in my opinion--makes it more of a show quilt. I've started a "cat's cradle ruler" quilt with a cheddar background. Hope to show it here someday!

I use a lot of Kona Snow but I also use other colors and muslin.

I rarely use white as a background. It's one of my least favorite colors. I tend toward bright colors and like black a lot for backgrounds. It makes the colors stand out more IMO.

My projects seldom have a background, per se. When they do, I have used cream, black, or any other color that seems appropriate at the time.

I rarely use white. I started out (40 years ago) being heavily influenced by the Amish style quilts and tend to the black, chocolate brown, deep hunter green or a very warm dark blue. I will use light colors, but I audition the darks first.

I use whatever color I like for the pattern, Some of the white are great. but others are just too much. There is no fast rule, only that it is your quilt and you can make it the way that pleases you.

When I am making scrap quilts, I like the way that white or off-white (like a muslin) makes the colors all look clean. I also like to use black as a background on scrap quilts because it makes all of the colors just POP.

However, for all other non-scrap quilts that are pieced or appliqued, I use whatever color that seems to bring the colors together harmoniously.

I think I use more black as a background color as it makes the colors pop.
