I need some help here. I have been working almost every day on this swap. I have several blocks made and only one has turned out to be 81/2" square! I finally cut the "next" set 5 3/8" square and still haven't got the exact 81/2". What the heck am I doing wrong? If anybody has had this experience or can offer advice I am more than ready to listen. Please!

Phyllis - -

Try starting with a 5 1/4" square to make your four patch. Then cut as per instructions. Then square to 8 1/2" unfinished. Any other questions, please let me know!

Thanks so much, I adjusted my needle placement to get a scant quarter inch seam and cut the squares between a quarter inch and 1/2" oversize. Seems to be working out better. This has to work, I am getting so frustrated!

Persevere, my fellow quilt buddy. Once you get your first 8 1/2" quilt block, it's all downhill from there. We're cheering you on!!!

You'd be surprised how those few tiny adjustments will make a huge difference. Hang in there!

Sunrise450. I also add a 1/4 inch to my D4P's, and use scant. It gives me some playing room. Also starching your fabric good helps in cutting and stretching.
