Ube how do you turn under your edges for applique? I love that you get such sharp points on the beak and such.

Thanks R. This is the first hand applique I have really done and I took what I learned from doing EPP and put it to use on the sharper points and deeper curves. The Sewline Glue stick works wonders for keeping those points in place.

I don't know if this is a conventional method but here's what I did.

I cut out the pattern and lay it wrong side up on my ironing pad. Using a narrow paint brush I paint starch along the seam line, (3/8 or 1/4") in from the edge of the fabric. I fold the seam in and press it with a medium iron, I have a little travel iron to do this. I do this all the way around the piece except for the points and deep curves.

At the points I use the glue pen but I test the position first and finger press, then glue. You have to fold the point in far enough to have a wide enough area along the fold to then fold in each side to create the point. One side first to the center point of the fold and trim extra fabric, dab with glue and finger press. I will also use a pin to manipulate the fabric. Then repeat the other side to create the point.

The inside curves are clipped and dabbed with glue and then fold the seam onto the glue and finger press. It will stay put!

After the seam is all turned under I place it on the background fabric and sew baste it in place. Then I can do the hand sewing with no worry about pins or shifting. Pull the basting out when done.

Maybe I'll take some pictures when I do the next bird.

These have been fun to make.

Anna, I am going to take some pictures to show what I am doing. I found I didn't want to be bothered with the traditional way of making templates and hand basting the edge under. I found this simpler, for me, odd ball that I am.

I forgot to add this. I get what the birds, deer, squirrels and bears don't. There is a whole hedge row and I'm thinking I might get a cup full of these wild black berries. Yummmmm

I did a tutorial on how I made hand applique work for me. I never liked doing it for years. It seemed so involved and I had such a time trying to keep pins in place, not get stuck or have the thread catch on a pin or having the piece shift while I was stitching.

Finally I decided to use the WHS as a vehicle to learn how to HA, finally!

Very nice ube, both the quilt top and pictures. Enjoying my visit with my little granddaughter but I do miss my quilt studio. Normally I quilt every chance I have.
