Yes, it's applique and on the spool it is real thread, and the bobbin thread pops up out of exactly the right place. For the detail on the metal work she has used fabric marker pens on grey. The machine embroidery for the decals around the bed of the machine is a wonderful touch. My husband thinks it is brilliant.
