My condolences (ms) I have been through that. My purse was stolen out of my Walmart shopping cart. I was fortunate in that the only credit card they used was one for gas, but of course I didn't know that when I was trying to get them all cancelled. And then getting new driver license, ID card (my husband was military), Social Security card, had to put a code on my checks for about a year, and on and on. I was very lucky the police figured it was teenagers and after they purchased gas they threw everything away. This happened about 15 years ago and there have been no problems with my credit or name. Again I am so sorry this happened and I pray everything will be alright.

I have all my squares cut and will get them in the mail Wednesday not Monday as I originally posted.

DDuMouchel 07-29-2014 03:51 AM

Thanks for letting me know my squares arrived safe and sound.

So sorry to hear about the vandalism of your car. It's really a shame that some people have no respect for other people's property.

MarthaT 07-29-2014 05:23 AM

What a mess to have to deal with. Sorry it happened to you! I have been collecting 2" squares since 1999. It all started with a Y2K swap and the goal was to get 2000 different fabrics. I've gotten well over 1000, but not sure how far I have to go yet on the second 1000. I have been looking for patterns to use that don't need to be completely laid out before sewing. I can't imagine laying out 2000 squares. Many that have caught my eye had them laid out in rainbow or other color-sorted layouts and I really didn't want to lay everything out before starting. But totally random postage stamp type quilt did not fit my goals either. Someone posted a link to this quilt the other day. I think this will be the one I go with. Except I am considering using black instead of white. What do y'all think? Will black stand out enough?

n2scraplvr just posted this quilt made of 2" and 3 1/2" squares. Enjoy

Thanks for posting the Growing up Odd quilt.

sewbizgirl 07-29-2014 10:53 AM

Great quilts! The Growing Up Odd one should look stunning with black borders. That's a versatile pattern. You could do some of the blocks with a single print and some with bigger squares... in with the little charms.

GingerK has joined our swap! Welcome, Ginger. Will add you to our list when I update.

DDuMouchel 07-30-2014 03:26 AM

Here's one of my UFO's that I pulled out recently ... pattern is called "Make Your Point" and can be found in BH&G's "Scrap Lovers Quilts".

I love that, Donna! It also gives me ideas of using just the border on other quilts. Would be so cute.

linmid 07-30-2014 06:45 AM

Yea after many unforseen delays my 8 set are going out in today's mail.

dottie dodge 07-30-2014 08:31 AM

Sign me up for 8 sets. Have all cut and packaged ready to mail. PM on its way.

Oh, trust me, showbizgirl, after spending 14 yrs. collecting these 2 inch sq., I'm determined every piece in this quilt will be 2" sq. and each from a different fabrics. LOL!!! (Yep, I'm stubborn!) But that is a great idea for another quilt, as long as it ends up being the size needed it could be a fabric with a beautiful big print that you don't want to cut up in some of the sections, small squares in another, larger squares in others, and even pieced blocks. Maybe a way to use some orphan blocks...okay, the wheels are turning. Doggonnit...another UFO is in the making! Gotta go finish the other ones in my sewing room first. NO MORE STARTING ANY MORE QUILTS UNTIL THE UFOs ARE CONQUERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck sticking to that, MarthaT!

MarthaT 08-01-2014 05:02 AM

For some reason I feel like I am being laughed at about not starting any new quilts until the UFOs are done. You don't think I can do it, do you? How dare you doubt my stubbornness!!! (LOL! It would certainly be a first! Knowing me, even if I thought I had finished them, I'd probably find one buried somewhere later that I did not even remember existed!)

sewbizgirl 08-01-2014 05:59 AM

It's just that most of us can't do that! LOL.... We will admire you big time if you can!

sewbizgirl 08-01-2014 02:01 PM

Ok swappers, our sign ups are now closed. It's time to get cutting and mailing, if you haven't already. I have about half the swaps in. Don't procrastinate! I deliberately set a short turnaround time so we could have our swaps quickly. They need to be in my hands by Aug. 15, so that means mailing early-- a week early if sending by first class mail. If I receive all of them early I will swap just as soon as I get the last one!

Below is our updated roster:

1. sewbizgirl--- 8 sets received
2. AnneP---4 sets
3. Crafty1---8 sets
4. oksewglad---5 sets
5. n10sgrrl---1 set received

sewbizgirl 08-01-2014 02:10 PM

I was thinking about running this 2" square swap every other month or so... so we can all keep up a stash of 2" squares. What do you all think about that? Next time I will raise the maximum amount of sets to around 12 or so, as the padded envelope can easily fit that many. This time I didn't want to go too high because I didn't know how many people would participate. If you are swapping a lot of sets, you need lots of swappers!

What's everyone planning for their weekend? I think I will stay home and have a low key sewing weekend with my new puppy. Our weather is supposed to be bad, so it will be a good time to stay indoors and sew, watch movies, and read! I just started reading "Water for Elephants".

sewbizgirl 08-02-2014 11:31 AM

Linmid I got your package of squares today... Will note it on the roster when I update! They look great....

DDuMouchel 08-02-2014 01:35 PM

I love the idea of having this swap several times a year. The two inch size is just so handy and many of Bonnie Hunter's scrappy designs use them too. Are you thinking they would all continue to be "kitchen sink" (any color goes) or would some of them be color controlled -- for example, blue and turquoise, pink to purple, etc?

oksewglad 08-02-2014 02:09 PM

I think it's kind of fun to throw in a one color set among the others. I did one in greens with no repeats in my other sets--so someone could get 2 sets from me with no repeats. Another thing I did was threw in an extra square (in case I can't count right!) which was the same in every set. It worked as a 50 square marker for me.

FYI I have all the blocks sewn for my version of Growing Up Odd from MarthaT's post #43. Now to sash them--I'm using a navy tonal for sashes instead of white and making 16 blocks rather than the 25 in the pattern. Have I really been sewing that much since the 29th:shock::D

linmid 08-02-2014 02:31 PM

This was my first 2" square swap and if I want to make a quilt of any size I'm gonna need lots more, so would love another swap at a few months interval. Also, I like the idea of doing the same color or 2 or 3 colors.

I like the idea, but it may be hard for people to come up with 50 of just one color group. What we could do is include a 'twist' next time, which is a designated theme. So you might choose to send 8 sets of the regular squares, and 5 twists, which might be bags of 25 green-only squares. Or kid's theme squares... or black and white squares... etc. A different 'twist' theme each time.

It's great if we don't have to go out and buy fabric to cut up, but rather be cutting our scraps as we accumulate them. I have a little storage cabinet with a drawer for 1.5" squares, one for 2" squares, and one for 2.5" squares, as well as some bigger, like 4" and 5". Bonnie Hunter inspired me to cut up my scraps into useable size squares and/or strips, and I found I really enjoy doing it.

djmat 08-03-2014 03:41 PM

This summer I've done 2 2" swaps, 2 2.5" swaps, 1 1.5" birthday swap, am currently cutting for swaps 2.5 (SheriR) and an upcoming fall swap of 12 swaps in 1.5, 2, 2.5. Leaving me very little time after working until 5pm to do the quilting I want to do with my new longarm, but hey, count me in any 2" swap, they come in handy!

Wow, that's a lot of swaps, DJ... my head would be swimming and I'd surely screw something up! You must be doing some swaps elsewhere, besides the QB?

djmat 08-03-2014 08:41 PM

Annually, QB (10-12 swaps), Curious Quilter (3), Flickr (2), locally (4), old friends (3-6) & new ones(1-3). The charm sise varies with each swap (remember, the last letter of the alphabet on this laptop is still not working).

The Fall swap I mentioned requires 100 different cotton fabrics & 12 swaps of those 100 count sets, so you get enough to finish projects (1200)! QB has the most cost efficient swaps because all swaps go to the host & you can swap 10 or more of the 50 count sets; Flickr has a host, too, so it is also cost efficient but you don't get the variety - usually need a yard each of 2-4 fabrics; Curious Quilter swaps are mailed directly to an assigned swapper so postal charges can vary especially if overseas or Canada, but the CQ swap variety is awesomeness personified and you make friends that may swap with you consistently when they buy new fabric. You should see some of the charms from overseas sent to me, cool stuff! Yes, Sheri, I swap whenever & wherever I can to make grand no repeat PSQs.

I would also like more 2" swaps but I'm not sure of a swap with one color theme. I agree, a twist might be in order with a regular swap.

You inspired me with this link and I sat down and sewed squares together from my 2" bin.

I modified the block to look like this This uses 16 blocks not 25; adding the borders keeps it at 90 x 90. I've also pieced enough squares to insert a scrappy border--a change for this EQ rendition.

I have all the blocks ready to make the quilt except the sashes. I'm using a dark blue and haven't decided if I want the cream/gold and blue fabric as border

or should I try this red print

You will need 48 9P, 16 of 49P, and 16 of 7 x 3 blocks.

sewbizgirl 08-09-2014 08:07 PM

That is a fabulous looking quilt! I like it with either the beige floral or the red floral, so I'm no help!

Here are a couple of patterns I liked for our squares:

That IS a cute idea! I think I like the blocks on point best ... wonder if I'd want to use sashing? Hmmm ...

I've been trying to find the perfect background fabric to use for my project. Unlike my current project (where I am now sewing the blocks together; yay!) my new one has large unpieced areas of background so I wanted to use a print so the seam lines wouldn't be quite as obvious. Yesterday I stopped by a shop in Riverside that was new to me. They had a lot of batiks and a longarm (their current date-to-completion is 10 weeks out, btw) and one very pretty fabric that wanted to come home with me, but it wouldn't work for this project! Grrrr -- the hunt continues.

sewbizgirl 08-10-2014 06:39 AM

I wouldn't use sashing for those mini-granny squares if they were set on point. On point, they have lines running through them diagonally and end up looking like a sort of argyle pattern. I wouldn't disrupt that with sashing. I love those little blocks and will have to use that idea for something... maybe a baby quilt or table topper.

Sorry you didn't find the fabric you were looking for, Donna. You'll just have to go to another shop... shucks. (JK!)

sewbizgirl 08-11-2014 12:22 PM

Wow... three packages were in the mailbox today! I received from Crafty1, dottiedodge, and LyndaOH. That's all but one. I am getting concerned about AnneP's package, since she mailed in 7/31. It should have been here a week ago. Hope it shows up soon.
