2019/2020 2.5" Birthday Swap

Hello everyone...........

2.5 Candy Birthday swap is now open
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Jq...oys7OZOmzQRrdQ for sign ups and will remain open until we get 37 people to join or February 19th.

Hello and welcome to the 2.5" Candy Birthday Swap. Candy squares are 2.5" 100% cotton squares that you would be happy to put in your own quilt. Please do not resend any previously recieved squares from any other swap.

This is how this swap will work:

1. Very Important this is a year long commitment.https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/i_...wUrKLkzH7nLcIs

2. PM me your name, address, Email, phone number and your birthday (month and day) https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/t8...eBHgsIEPbcGYg2

Newbies (new to this swap) you must get a recommendation from a past hostess or from Anyone that was in a previous birthday swap. Absolutely No Flakers here!!! You must have swap or know the person giving the recommendation.

3. While you are waiting for the swap to start get your packages of 50 unique 2.5" candy squares ready to be mailed. I will show you how the best way is to package them.

4. Starting for March (on feb 20) I will send everyone a list of who is celebrating a birthday that month so you can send out their "candy present". I will send out the list on the 20th of each month. You should have your envelopes ready when I send these addresses out.

5. Birthday person please keep track of who you received your candy from, please let me know if you have not received a package from someone. Please post a Thank You on the board to Everyone that has sent you a package on our thread.

6. I will have contests again this year but they will be randomly throughout the year. Feel free to play as often as you want the only rule is: You must be a swapper in good standing to win. Which means Every package that has been sent by you has been received on time. I keep track when every package is received....this is why it is very important for the Birthday receiver to post received packages in a timely manner.

7. Birthday Recipient, please give positive feedback to everyone who you receive from on time. Your package must be on time to get positive feedback. Anyone over 10 days late will get Negative feedback.

8. Sit back and wait for your birthday then go to your mailbox and enjoy little packages all month long! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/PC...mLUQ1m-NLpYx9nhttps://lh4.googleusercontent.com/ti...74fiVsBtGZFB2k

9. Please post on the thread when you have mailed your birthday package and of course wish them a Happy Birthday.
10. 3 or more "Late" packages will disqualify any one to participate in future swaps.

I am going to limit this to the first 37 people and only addresses in the USA (for postage sake Sorry).

The general swap rules apply: https://www.quiltingboard.com/member-swaps-round-row-robins-f11/rules-swaps-similar-activities-updated-8-december-2010-a-t20154.html

Any questions please feel free to post them in this thread...because someone else probably has the same ones!

This is our seventh year for this swap .....the first, second and third year went well and many friends were made. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/Ob..._kWU6EULxv16zc Fourth year ...everyone’s packages were on time… Fifth and sixth year almost all were on time!....I expect to have everyone one on time this year!!!!

Looking forward to another year of fun, friends and of course cute little candy squares!!!

Fun, fun, fun.

Barb, my email is on the way!~

Macybaby 01-29-2019 11:55 AM

I'm very happy to be joining in this year. I already have a project in mind for the candies.

I'll be able to use my stripology ruler to cut the squares, goes really fast!

I also love any reason to play with my stash.

Rosemary Attaway 01-29-2019 12:31 PM

welcome newcomers! You will love this swap! I think this is my 4th or 5th year.I have three projects to finish.I have had some arthritis and back problems it has been hard to sit and sew for very long at a time.My hope is to get these finished before I start anything else!!!

suern3 01-29-2019 03:31 PM

This sounds interesting but I don't quite understand how it works. Are you paired with another person to exchange with? How many packets of 50 would be required during the year? Thanks.

Queenbarbiej 01-29-2019 03:38 PM

Suern3 the way I understand it is that you get a list of the birthday people and you send each a pack of 50 - 2.5" squares

aborning 01-29-2019 03:42 PM

Barbarakibler23, I just sent my intent to you to be in the group again this year. I really enjoy this swap. My life was so extremely busy last year. I had two daughters and a niece get married, moved my mom to Assisted living and cleaned out her house to sell, and had an auction, and my mother-in-law passed away and had to clean out here house and have an auction, too. This year I have already been cutting as my life has now slowed back down to normal. Welcome to all the newbies. It is so much fun. I am currently working on a quilt with my squares from this swap and my own stash.

Thanks for the info. Now that I understand, I don't have enough fabric to participate.

Thank you for having me. I’ve been scanning my fabric since I learned about this swap. I’ve been in other swaps with many of these wonderful quilters.

Now, i’ll Wait for further instructions. Or when you say begin, i’ll Ask a dozen questions. :)

barbarakibler23 01-29-2019 06:43 PM

GramE.... make sure you read all the info on the first post. Then you can start cutting your squares out. make sure you have 50 different fabrics for each person. So far we are up to 33 people but I pretty sure we will get up to 37.

Well, prewashing required?

PamelaOry 01-29-2019 07:29 PM

Great question.

JENNR8R 01-30-2019 05:38 AM

I'm happy to join for another year. Last year I made the mistake of using all of several colors in a project so I'm short on variety. This is the perfect way to get that problem solved. It always amazes me that I'll get 1,850 squares of fabric without any repeats!

Welcome newcomers! I hope you have as much fun as I do.

sunrise450 01-30-2019 09:22 AM

Welcome to the newcomers! You are going to meet some great quilters in this swap. Have fun! fun! fun.

barbarakibler23 01-30-2019 10:16 AM

No pre-washed is NOT required. but with that said some may be pre-washed. Mine are mostly scraps, mostly given to me and gathered through out the past year. So I don't know if they are. I just know I like them and would put them in my own quilt. (and am....I always cut a set or two just for me).

well if we have "newbies" what are the returning ones called??? Oldies??? returners??? vetrans????

I got it...."knowbies"!

So all you "Knowbies" out there feel free to post some photos of the quilts & projects you have made with you little squares.

*** we also call 2.5" squares ....candies. Just incase that every comes up!

PamelaOry 01-30-2019 10:59 AM

A few more questions:

what kind of fabrics are best? I have several batik fat quarters that I think would make cute squares but don’t know if batiks are the best choice for this swap?

can you use precut candies?

redstilettos 01-30-2019 11:11 AM

I've swapped batiks before. And I have received precut candies. I'm okay and good with either! :)

Thank you. Most of my fabrics are prewashed but I have some things that were given to me and i’m Just not sure about it. I would, like you, use them myself, but I wanted to be sure. I’ve already started cutting. It’s -20 degrees here, temperature, and sitting in the dining room cutting candies sounded like a nice project for today. My Labyrinth quilt is not going anywhere. And Sunday it’s supposed to be 54 degrees.

Janice McC 01-30-2019 12:33 PM

Afternoon, everyone. Welcome to the newbies and the knowbies! Looks like we might be almost full already. I can always cut a few more sets if necessary. Been working on a block for a swap I’m in. It’s 40 degrees now, up from 20 this morning, so no complaints from me but it’s a nice day to be inside stitching something. Have a pleasant rest of your day. :)

travelinggramma 01-30-2019 01:34 PM

So great to see some familiar names - and a few new-to-me ones! It will be a fun group, to be sure. Sorry to see so many freezing places out there. Although our nights in AZ may go down to freezing, it warms up nicely during most days. We do have an occasional snow flurry but we don't own a snow shovel since moving here!
I have about a dozen envelopes ready - and then got tired of counting and cutting!

IrishMom 01-30-2019 01:43 PM

Thanks for all the kind welcomes from all the "knowbies"! I'm like GramE, it's brutally cold here in Michigan. We are in a State of Emergency and hardly anything is open. Luckily the Heating repair men are working because we woke up this morning to a house at 60 degrees and dropping. It get to 56 degrees before the repairman came. Currently it feels like -32 outside! So most of my day was spent bundled up under two quilts and a heated cherry pit bag which I made for Christmas gifts this year. My house now is up to 67 degrees and I am ready to have some snow day fun at the sewing machine! Stay warm friends!

hav4boys 01-30-2019 03:48 PM

I have weekend work for me now... I have candies to cut. I always love this. Last year I went with all greens and blues... what to do this year. I may have to go shopping (much funner than going through my stash)

GramE 01-30-2019 05:25 PM

Do you try to make each packet unique for each persons requests? Like color requests? Or dislikes? I see that some already have packets made up, so I was wondering how that worked.

WMUTeach 01-30-2019 06:20 PM

Gram E, I only know what I do and that is make 37 or 38 sets of 50 that are all the same or nearly all the same. I would not recommend trying to meet individual preferences it is too complicated. Oh, if I know someone "LOVES" pink, I might stick an extra square or two of pink in the set. This swap is meant to be fun, simple and for me to whittle down my stash. Yeah, I know I get back as many as I sent but.... I don't have to cut them and it is just so much fun looking at all 1800 or so little birthday surprises. I will dig out some photos of quilts I have made over the past few years with my little candies. I'll post them another time.

Thank you. I was wondering today as I was cutting, what would 1,850 2 1/2” squares make. I’m hand sew a lot so the idea that my portable stash will be increasing is good news. I agree, trying to keep a list of everyone’s preferences might be a bit daunting, especially for a newbie.

ps I cut a lot today it seems, but not much whittled away!

I cut all my squares and wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in a birthday card. I lay all my squares on a piece of card stock the same size as the birthday cards and then wrap them. I purchase my cards from the dollar tree. They have great cards. This is just one idea, everybody does what works for them.

This is a great swap and everybody is so nice and helpful

Lstew2212 01-30-2019 07:32 PM

I also need to make my pictures smaller, WOW
