The wayward envelope of candies from TX has finally made it to Nebraska! Thank you Loveofquilts. There seems to be a problem with the USPS delivering candies between TX and Nebraska. I resent an envelope to Crispy_frog, who lives in TX. Let's see how long it takes...

Loveofquilts 06-16-2021 07:48 AM

Woohoo! I'm so glad you received it. Sorry it was late. Yes that is strange about the mail between our 2 states... You are most welcome. :)

Here is my alternate quilt for my sister Birthday so DH can keep the rainbow quilt. Finished it over the weekend. I would have liked to put more quilting on it, but I ran out of time. Now my 6yrs old DD wants to keep this one. Between her and her dad, I would never give any quilt away.

Gave it to my sister yesterday, and she loves it better than the rainbow one.

I have a few more Boom26 blocks to make and some quilting to be finished, but I am ready to play around with the Jacob's Ladder.

sewbizgirl 06-16-2021 05:00 PM

That is pretty, AHWU. I can see why your little girl fell in love with it.

I've been sewing candies together for my Jacob's Ladder quilt too. I'm debating if I should make scrappy HSTs in it, or use all one fabric with white and just let the 4 patches and 16 patches be scrappy. I will experiment but for now there's a lot of candy sewing to do!

WMUTeach 06-16-2021 06:18 PM

I will start posting my pictures and progress for the Jacob's ladder in the next few days. I have been in a very focused time of working on ending one class and starting another for the university. Looking forward to fall when I can have a little more time. But, Jacob must get going up the ladder. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Sewbiz, I am planning on white or cream for one side of my HSTs but like you not sure if I should be consistent with one color for the colored side or go scrappy. I may make a couple each way and then decide. Looking forward to Friday when I can approach my machine again and not feel like I am slighting my students. I am in need of some sewing therapy.

Hey, y'all the next birthday list will come out on the 20th but don't panic. The only July birthday isn't until the 21. That gives us plenty of time to procrastinate, right?

Beautiful heart blocks, ahwu!

I've been really focusing on catching up with our homeschooling these past few weeks. We took off a couple of months when little Madailein was born and during the postpartum period. Sometimes I feel bad still homeschooling in the summer, but honestly, it might be for the better. It is too hot now to send the kiddos to play outside, so staying in and learning is better than too much computer time. I plan on giving the girls a few weeks off in the Fall to play outside.

Little Madailein is growing so fast and is already scooting around on the floor! She's only 3 months old too!

sewbizgirl 06-17-2021 08:37 AM

NZ, Wow, look at that baby girl grow! Seems like yesterday that Madailine was born.... Love her red fuzz. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

The great thing about homeschooling is how adaptable it is.

What are those pretty blocks on the floor beside baby? They look great.

NZquilter 06-17-2021 09:45 AM

SBG, I do enjoy homeschooling a lot. I love seeing the "light bulb" moments on the girl's faces! The flexibility is wonderful too. There are so many curriculums and resources nowadays, it makes it a huge world to explore. We are currently doing a boxed curriculum, but once I get comfortable I'll be willing to branch out a bit. I have my eye on an accredited Christian curriculum for the higher grades that has teachers and zoom calls, with a lot of support for students and parents.

The blocks beside Madailein are the Riley Blake weekly quilt along challenge, I think it's called. There is a link to it on the "Links" forum. I laid the blocks out on my bed and then thought Madailein's romper matched the yellows. Of course she is prettier than the blocks, especially with her sweet cheeks. 😊

sewbizgirl 06-17-2021 10:22 AM

Of course she is prettier than the blocks, especially with her sweet cheeks. 😊

She sure is!

ibex94 06-17-2021 04:00 PM

Precious baby! She has such a sweet smile.

hav4boys 06-19-2021 07:01 AM

Adorable baby NZ.

I am heading out on a weeklong road trip with my second son. We are headed to Yellowstone. He called a couple months ago and asked if I wanted to take vacation and do a road trip. Of course I do. I will be back Monday the 28th, so I hope there are no July 1 birthdays.

Crispy_Frog 06-19-2021 07:24 AM

I just got my birthday greeting from Have4Boys! Thanks!

hav4boys 06-19-2021 07:48 AM

Good gracious... that took forever to get to you.

Loveofquilts 06-19-2021 05:22 PM

I agree NZ, that baby's smile is awesome! I love it. The red hair is so cute.

Crispy_Frog 06-21-2021 12:49 PM

Number 18! I received candies from Patrick's Mom today.
She kindly sent a new card since the first card was lost in the mail.
Again, I want to thank everyone for their birthday greetings!

WMUTeach 06-21-2021 05:55 PM

Just sent out the July Birthday girl's information. Sorry, Hav4boys you, did not get a message.... you are the only one this month.

Hoping to squeeze in some sewing machine time tomorrow. This class is really devouring my time. It will be over in a 7 days, but...the next class starts 8 days from now. Whine, whine, whine but the end of August will be a little break of about ... a week.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/shock.png

I think I am sniffing out the sweet scent of a contest. The wheels are turning and I am thinking it will appear just after July 4th.
Wink, Wink.

A short while back a photo was posted as an example of what we could do with our candies and some of us thought a sew-a-long might be fun. Well, here we go. This is more of a follow along. Sew along with me or just lurk along. We only want to encourage each other to use our 2.5 birthday squares. It will be fun to see everyone's color choices and progress through the summer months.

I am using the block pattern from Quilter's Cashe` https://www.quilterscache.com/J/JacobsLadderBlock.html
I will post a photo of my progress every two weeks or so. Join in and share your comments and photos of progress. If you are using a different source for this Jacob's Ladder block, post it here on our thread.

If my calculations are correct, I will need 180 four patches made from our birthday squares and 144 HSTs. Wow! that sounds like a lot, but making a little here and a few more there will get me to the total needed. The end size of the top would be 72X72. I may make changes along the way. Who knows.

As you can see from my photos, I have chosen to use three colors that I have plenty of in my 2.5 collection, blue, purple and green. I am leaning toward the mid-color to dark colors of those three choices. I don't have enough white in my 2.5 bin, so I am using a consistent white-on-white print for the ladder and in the HSTs, but follow your whim as you make your own. I just sewed my colored squares onto a white 2.5 strip and then cut them apart. Easy-peasy and went fast. My one hint would be to press consistently one way or the other so everything will "nest" well.

Picture 1 is the pile of 2.5s I pulled from my collection. Picture 2 is of some finished 4 patches and HSTs. I just had to try the HSTs to see if they were accurate and the pattern works! Picture 3 is of the back of my 4 patches. I spin my centers but you don't need to. It is just habit for me.

My goal for the next two weeks is 90 of the four-patches. Will see how it goes with other projects, work and holiday celebrations that are so important this year. These would be good leaders and enders if you are in the middle of other projects. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Hope to see your piles of four-patches and/or HSTs coming soon to our Birthday Swap thread. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

sewbizgirl 06-22-2021 06:51 PM

Looks good, WMUT! Your fabrics will make a nice quilt.

I have started mine too, but not using the QC pattern. I'm just following that picture I posted. I have a stack of scrappy 16-patches. Not sure of my plan for the HSTs... whether to use colors with white, or scrappy whites, or what. I'm going to experiment to see what I like best.

Loveofquilts 06-23-2021 03:38 PM

I sent out my envelope today for July, she picked it up a little bit ago. Yeah!

Ibex94. What a cute birthday cake! Love it. I may try to copy it and save for another occasion. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png Did it and now it is in my file too! I see it is a block. That makes it even better!

NZquilter 06-25-2021 05:49 PM

I mailed our July birthday girl's envelope out today.

I've been sewing in every spare minute this past week, making a quilt for my little Isabelle who is turning two this weekend. I feel bad that I hadn't got around to making her her own quilt yet, so she's getting one! I just need to stitch the binding down. I'll try to share a picture of it tomorrow.

WMUTeach 06-26-2021 03:07 AM

NZ, I am recalling an old phrase about the cobbler's children going without shoes. Not your little Isabelle. She shall have her quilt! Anxious to see the photo of your accomplishment.

Here is Isabelle's quilt. I woke up early to stitch the binding on before she woke up for the day. She LOVES Curious George, so I found a large coloring picture of Curious George on line and used it as an applique. The nine patches are leftover from the nine patch swap Sewbizgirl hosted a few years ago, but could easily be made with our 2.5" candies.

sewbizgirl 06-26-2021 07:03 AM

That is an adorable quilt, NZ! I'm sure Isabelle will love it. What a great Mommy you are!

ahwu 06-26-2021 09:22 AM

NZ, the quilt is so cute.

WMUTeach 06-26-2021 04:10 PM

One more idea for our Birthday Candies! George is such a good monkey friend and so child like. Cute little quilt finished just in time.

Goodness, we are on the ball again. I haven't even packed my envelope. Oh they are cut just not laid out ready to slip into their envelope. Guess it is time to get on the move.

aborning 06-29-2021 06:13 PM

I apologize Have4boys. I've been crazy busy this summer and not on computer much. I just looked for the July birthdays and yours is July 1st! Sorry, I'll put you package in the mail tomorrow but it will still get to you late. Have a great Birthday.

sewbizgirl 06-29-2021 08:28 PM

Aborning, HAV4boys birthday is not until July 21. You still have plenty of time for Birthday wishes and candy. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

I think I posted a photo of this as a flimsy, but now it is done all except for the label. I don't know who it is going to, so the label will wait. All 2.5 squares in 9-patches.
