I'm excited to do this since this is my first swap. This is also a new block for me. I had intended on doing an autumn leaf quilt of my own in a couple of weeks so this will make it go faster. The only real difference in mine is I'm going to take leaves from silk bushes and applique them in the fabric. So with the pieced blocks it'll give it a good dimension.

Wow! I would really love to see pics of this when you are finished. Just wondering how it will do in the washer though? Sounds pretty!

I have my fabric cut, just waiting for time to do. Will let ya know if I am in on this swap. Just want to be done before sign up.

A scant 1/4" is just slightly less than a 1/4" seam, when sewing a seam.

Thank you for answering my question...

I always wondered about the scant too & read recently where it is 1 thread less than 1/4", this helped me visually understand 1/4" scant.

Alaska 08-05-2011 07:47 AM

Sign me up! Question, I am new here, are we doing black backgrounds or cream backgrounds, or is it our choice? And what is or how do we do a PM?

bookworm 08-05-2011 08:30 AM

Black backgrounds - please take the time to read the first post as it has pretty much all the info.

To PM you click the user name then click "send PM". I'll add you now though

bookworm 08-05-2011 10:59 AM

I've gotten two swappers's blocks already. Good job everyone

I am VERY disappointed! Each one of us MUST be sure there is 1/4" seam allowance beyond the points!!!!!!!!!!!

Would love to join the swap.... Fall theme sounds awesome. Count me in.

But if you follow the pattern and it comes out short how do you fix it, I mean how much should you add when you are cutting for it to come out right, I'm new to quilting and I follow the patterns but I notice sometimes there is no space and I do use the 1/4" feed foot...

I'm so nervous & hope I do well for all.

Don't be nervous for me this is how I'm learning the new blocks and you get better with everyone you make...

Instead of cutting 4-7/8" strips, I just cut 5" strips. That's much easier than always finding the 7/8" marking. That gives me some extra when squaring the half squares.

After marking the diagonal on the lightest colored square, be sure to stitch a little less than 1/4" away from the mark.
When you square them up (I use a 6-1/2" square, couldn't do without it!), you will get a nice true 4-1/2" square. You place the diagonal marking of the square ruler on the diagonal (top side) of your square.

When sewing the squares, row by row horizontally, be sure the seams meet exactly. Being careful and precise should leave the 1/4" beyond the point at the edges.

There is a lot of math involved in quilt piecing in order to make everything come out as it should.

This is the best I can explain without showing you how to do this. I hope it helps. Good luck!

neayact 08-07-2011 12:37 PM

Instead of cutting 4 7/8" I cut 5 and sew the half square triangles and then trim to 4 1/2 then my points line up and I get the 1/4" that I used to miss when I used to use 4 7/8"

Lv2sew2011 08-07-2011 06:51 PM

Thank you neayact and Retired to quilt, I will try that with my blocks, I will be starting them soon since I'm almost caught up on ones that are almost due...

debe 08-11-2011 04:05 AM

love the idea of the swap but the turnaround time is too quick for me....maybe another time

purplesharon 08-11-2011 04:24 AM

I have 2 sets going in the mail today. Loved the block went together fast.

bookworm 08-11-2011 08:01 PM

A scant 1/4" is just slightly less than a 1/4" seam, when sewing a seam.

Thank you for answering my question...

When you are making a scant 1/4" seam you move the needle over two threads (or so) in towards the edge of the fabric. That is a scant quarter inch seam. Some machines have a needle moving button. Push it once and you should be right on the money. You can test it by using an old needle and a piece of paper. Draw a quarter inch mark on a piece of paper. and sew down it normal. Now move the needle over once and sew again. It should be just to the right of the line now. Or if you don't have that feature adjust your position of the fabric to have the needle just to the right of that line. That is how I figured it out anyway.

You can place a full stack of post-its just ahead of the machine foot to help guide the fabric correctly. That helps.

That's the reason why I didn't sign up. I intended to do so as I really liked the theme and idea and I've never done a swap. But then I saw some of the samples posted and realized you'd loose the points when sewing them together as there is not enough allowance so I chickened out not wanting to be frustrated by what I received.

QuilterMomma 08-15-2011 01:15 PM

Ok, I think I may be able to finish my blocks and have them mailed to you. 1 set only right now. I have them cut up and the thangles all sewn so I just have to trim and assemble the blocks.

neayact 08-17-2011 03:26 AM

Anyone know how many sets fit in a 4.95 priority mailer?

bookworm 08-17-2011 06:50 AM

2 sets

neayact 08-18-2011 02:53 AM

So I can't decide on th next color of my leaves set. I have a darker red with yellow in it or a creamsicle orange print. Any suggestions?

bookworm 08-18-2011 06:11 AM

They both sound good... the orangeish might look really good with the black

mom-6 08-18-2011 07:04 PM

Either one would be gorgeous! One of the prints in my scrappy block is sorta the creamsicle orange.

sapdoggie 08-18-2011 07:17 PM

All of these blocks are beautiful :!: :!: :!: My piecing skills with half square triangles needs to improve before I am brave enough to participate in a swap of this caliber.
Sure do like looking though ;) ;) ;)

sapdoggie, this is the first time I've tried this block and really is quit easy, I always make a sample to see how it comes out then I will make the others if it's easy enough, you ought to try and give it a shot. We all have to start somewhere is what everyone keeps telling me.

sapdoggie 08-19-2011 04:09 AM

oops= hit reply too soon

sapdoggie 08-19-2011 04:10 AM

Thanks Luv2Sew2011 - . I may get brave after I finish a couple more "have to get done" gifts.

There are all levels of quilters welcome in these swaps sapdoggie. The nine patches can be adorable if you use cute fabric!

So here's a mockup of my blocks. After reading through most of this thread I realize there is a concern for losing the points of the leaf when you sew on your sashing, etc. I followed the suggested pattern from quilters cache exactly and there's room on every point to sew a quarter inch seam. I have my pieces ready and I need to do this today yet because we hope to leave on holidays soon and I don't want this waiting for me when I get back. I'm not sure how long it will take to ship from Canada so sooner earlier than too late.

the colors are a lot truer in real life (as always!)
